The short answer
Lungo is a Smoke Free alternative for people who want a playful companion at the centre of their quit journey. Its daily check-in turns avoided cigarettes into progress for your frog; virtual savings unlock items for his world. Tracking and craving tools sit alongside that loop.
Smoke Free is an established option with behavioural support and published app research. It also uses game elements. Choosing Lungo is about the experience you want to return to, rather than a claim that it has a higher quit rate.
Lungo vs Smoke Free: the practical differences
Both apps aim to support a quit attempt. The table separates Lungo’s current product features from the features Smoke Free describes publicly. Availability can vary by platform, country and paid plan; the linked sources let you check the current offer.
On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to compare both apps.
| What matters to you | Lungo | Smoke Free |
|---|---|---|
| Daily experience | Pixel-frog companion, check-ins, XP and items. | Quit dashboard, missions and behavioural tools. [1] |
| Game elements | Streaks, achievements and cosmetic rewards. | Badges; Inner Dragon studied as an integrated pet game. [1] [3] |
| Progress tracking | Smoke-free time, savings and avoided cigarettes or pods. | Smoke-free time, savings and health indicators. [1] |
| When cravings hit | Craving log and guided one-minute breathing exercise. | Craving diary and coping tools. [1] |
| Personal support | Self-guided; no live cessation-advisor service. | Chatbot and advisor options described by the provider. [2] |
| Product research | No published clinical quit-rate trial of Lungo. | Published trials of app components; results depend on the study. [2] [3] |
| Cost structure | Free core; optional Lungo Plus. | Free download with paid options. [1] |
| Phones | iOS and Android. | iOS and Android. [2] |
Compare the parts you will actually use. A longer feature list does not tell you whether opening an app tomorrow will feel inviting, whether you will log a difficult moment honestly, or whether you would benefit from individual support.
Try Lungo’s free coreGamification is central to how Lungo works
A quit attempt asks you to keep doing something whose biggest benefits arrive later. Lungo gives the effort a small, visible response today. The idea is to make coming back feel worthwhile, even on an ordinary day with no new milestone to celebrate.
- 1
Set your starting point
Tell Lungo what you used to smoke or vape. Your previous consumption gives the tracker context, so progress reflects your own starting point instead of an arbitrary target.
- 2
Hand over what you did not smoke
At your daily check-in, avoided cigarettes or puffs become part of Lungo’s pixel world. It is a short ritual: an acknowledgement of something you did, with a character to come back to.
- 3
See XP, streaks and achievements grow
The app makes progress visible through several kinds of feedback. Smoke-free time matters, but so do small moments of reflection and the practical information you collect about your quit journey.
- 4
Give your savings a playful second purpose
Your virtual savings unlock cosmetic items for Lungo and his rooms. Your real money stays yours. A hat or a trophy gives the progress a personal touch without changing what the savings tracker represents.
These are design choices intended to support motivation. A frog cannot experience your cravings, decide your next step or make nicotine dependence disappear. The useful part is the connection between real progress and feedback you enjoy seeing.
Lungo also lets you choose smoking, vaping or both. That keeps the daily ritual close to the habit you are changing. If vaping is your focus, see the dedicated quit vaping app page for how those settings work.
Can gamification help with quitting? What the evidence says
Research gives a reason to take playful support seriously. It also gives a reason to be precise about the difference between keeping someone engaged and demonstrating that a specific app helps them quit.
2025 · Systematic review and meta-analysis
Promising results across gamified interventions
A review of 15 randomised trials involving 5,075 participants found higher pooled smoking-abstinence rates with gamified interventions. The interventions and follow-up periods varied; some outcomes were self-reported, and individual game mechanics could not be isolated. This supports the approach, not a proven effect of Lungo’s frog, XP or rewards. [4]
2024 · Randomised controlled trial
Smoke Free’s own pet-game study
Researchers tested Inner Dragon inside Smoke Free over eight weeks. Access to the game improved some engagement and programme-adherence measures. Self-reported seven- and thirty-day abstinence, and verified seven-day abstinence at follow-up, did not differ significantly between groups. This shows why more app use and higher quit rates are different outcomes. [3]
What this means for Lungo: we use gamification because it is a promising way to support a repeatable routine. Lungo has not been tested in a published clinical quit-rate trial. These studies do not establish that Lungo is more effective than Smoke Free.
Smoke Free deserves credit here: it uses badges and has investigated a pet game. We therefore do not describe it as a plain timer without play. For a wider explanation of mechanics and evidence, read our guide to gamification in quit smoking apps.
What a day with Lungo can look like
Imagine opening the app in the morning. You see your frog, check your progress and complete the daily check-in. There may be nothing dramatic to report. That ordinary return is part of the intended experience: a brief moment to recognise the effort that can otherwise go unnoticed.
Later, a familiar trigger appears: a coffee break, a stressful message or the end of a meal. You can record the craving and start the guided breathing exercise. The purpose of that minute is to make room for your next decision. You do not need to earn an item or reach a level before using the core craving tools.
When you return to your progress, the numbers and the game give you different views of the same journey. Savings show an estimate of money not spent. Items let you personalise Lungo’s world. Neither requires you to spend that real-world saving on the app.
A difficult day is also a reason to return. Record a slip honestly and think about the situation around it. A character and a streak should support reflection, rather than make you feel that you must hide what happened. Our guide to a cigarette after quitting explains practical next steps.
This is an example of how you might use the features, not a tested treatment schedule or a promise about your outcome. You can decide whether this kind of daily companion suits your personality and routine.
Which app is the better fit for you?
Consider Lungo if…
You want progress to feel personal
A pixel companion, small rewards and a daily check-in appeal to you. You want a self-guided experience for smoking, vaping or both, with practical tools next to the game.
Consider Smoke Free if…
You value its established support
Its published app research and provider-described behavioural support matter to you. Check the current offer if you want advisor or chatbot options that Lungo does not provide. [2]
If Smoke Free is already helping, there is no reason to switch just because another app exists. If your current routine has stopped feeling inviting, Lungo’s free core gives you a way to see whether a different style feels useful. Choose around your needs rather than treating the comparison as a contest.
If you mainly want human support, a virtual companion is a different kind of service. Consider that need separately from how much you like the design. An app can accompany professional support; the choice of app does not need to decide your entire quit plan.
What is free in Lungo?
The core quit journey is free: your buddy, daily check-ins, streaks, savings, craving logging and breathing exercises. Lungo Plus is optional and adds deeper craving insights, exclusive cosmetics and extended calendar history. You can use the core routine without buying Plus.
Lungo is ad-free and can be used locally on your phone. Optional cloud sync requires consent in the account flow. If keeping your journey local is important to you, read the privacy policy for the details.
Smoke Free also offers a free download with paid options. This page does not compare exact subscription amounts: store, country, plan and offers can change. Check the current store listing and the purchase screen before paying. [1]
Questions about this Smoke Free alternative
Is Lungo proven to work better than Smoke Free?
No. There is no published head-to-head trial, and Lungo has no published clinical quit-rate trial. This page compares the experience and features. The research section explains why gamification is promising without attributing another intervention’s results to Lungo.
Does Smoke Free use gamification too?
Yes. Badges are part of its public feature description, and the Inner Dragon pet game was studied inside Smoke Free. Our comparison is about Lungo’s particular daily ritual and style. [1] [3]
Can I use Lungo to quit vaping?
Yes. Choose cigarettes, vapes or both; tracking adapts to your selection. The smoking studies cited above are not direct evidence for Lungo’s effectiveness in quitting vaping.
Will my Smoke Free history transfer automatically?
Lungo does not offer an automatic Smoke Free import. Plan around that if keeping your existing record matters to you; do not assume that changing apps transfers the history.
